they can justify raising taxes on the middle-class who have been buried the last four years. >> to joe biden. no, don't boo. he is the best thing we have got going, guys. >> it was the biggest brownson's encore. i read that in a column friday morning. on the cover 25th, 1415 on christmas day at parkton corps, king henry led his army to victory. charles the six was mentally incapacitated at the time of battle. that is as far as i want to take that one. agincourt? >> yes, you were there, as i recall. you covered it for the daily frog. it was quite a rout. when i wrote the column, i try to keep from gloating, but i'm not sure i succeeded. >> you did not. >> the washington punditry heavily supported by the polling concludes that government romney won the first debate hands down and that the president was off his game. >> you have been president four years. you said you would cut the deficit in half. we still have trillion dollar deficits. >> five weeks before the election, he says his big bold idea is, never mind. >> if there is any good news for the president after the debate is that the

the subject. i think he had had enough talking about taxes and debt. how much of it is just not true? there was one moment when they were talking about how only 3% of the business owners would be affected, but governor romney came back and pointed out that they are the ones who create most of the jobs. i think tonight was an important moment. i think for the first time, the american people saw these two men standing next to each other. they saw a dramatic difference between someone based on realistic ideas and a president who's in towercam pay is based on rhetoric and myth. >> the facts or on his side. the president could not justify his position. the first the minutes were painful to watch. the president kept going are around and around on the tax issue. the governor was ready. muncie realized he had run out of a tax and things to say that were not true, he wants to change the subject. he turned to the moderator and said maybe we should move on to something else pyrrhic he was clearly uncomfortable discussing the debt and the economy. greg will we see a jump in the polls for mr. rom

that says, if we cut taxes, skew toward the wealthy, and roll back regulations we will be better off. i have a different view. i think we have to invest in education and training. i think it is important for us to develop new sources of energy here in america, that we change our tax code to make sure we are helping small businesses and companies here in the united states. that we take some of the money we are saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild america, and that we reduce our deficit in a way that makes us ablet -- that makes it able for us to create critical investments. it is up to you. are we going to go from the top down, which is what got us into this mess, or do we embrace the new economic patriotism that says america does best when the middle class does best? i'm looking forward to having that debate. >> governor romney. >> thank you, jim. i appreciate the chance to be with the president. appreciate the university of denver and their welcome. congratulations to you, mr. president, on your anniversary. i am sure this is the most dramatic place you could imagine, here with me. so

taxes on people at the high end of the income scale apreposterous. i think you would agree. obviously if the republicans get into power they are going to cut taxes at the high income and he got on stage tonight and said no. >> romney's problem is that this debate is in 2012, not 1812. we have things we can hit a button to show what he has said before. no doubt mitt romney was at his best tonight but his best is not good enough. when you look at the fact that he's saying that taxes will not go up on the middle class, yet he is proposing all the way through this campaign, dealing with deductions in terms of mortgage investments, dealing with deductions in terms of charity, it will in fact go up on the middle class and a much lower tax rate for the rich. the fact will not bear him out. when he stood there all night advocating states' rights across the board, what is that saying to women about who is going to decide on women's issues? what is that saying to minorities t immigration? this man went back to the 19th century on states' rights all night long. when we hear him talk about things

our record and our pro-growth tax reform cuts taxes 20% and higher take-home pay for middle class and pro-growth economic policies, that creates about 7 million jobs. so, the final analysis, people will realize, all the president is offering is more of the same with another round of stimulus and higher tax rates on job creators. we are offering very specific reforms, how do you save and shrink the medicare and social security and prevent the debt crisis and grow jobs, how do you have an interview policy that unleashes american internally and has energy independence? >> chris: here's my question, though, the fact the message has not gotten through as effectively as it could, so far, is that your fault? the romney campaign's fault or the voters fault. >> look, i think the president has done an effective job at trying to confuse the issue and disrupt positions an distract people, but, at the end of the day i don't think that will work. >> chris: any responsibility... >> look, we are going to prosecute the campaign, in the way that we have always planned, we'll give the country a very

, for that matter, those two. to finance a big across the board tax cut but not tell us how. not what big across the board deductions he'll deny people in order to pay for it or even what taxes he's been paying himself over the years. or how he'll finance all those popular things in the president's health care plan once he kills the plan itself. lots of secrets. secrets because he himself has no earthly idea what the answers are. i'm joined by democratic strategist bob shrum and salon's joan walsh. first, however, we have two new national polls on the presidential race. let's check the "hardball" scoreboard. according to a new "washington post"/abc news poll, president obama has a two-point lead holding there, 49%/47%. same score in the new politico poll. obama by two, 49%/47%. "the new york times" this weekend reported on the two campaigns' ongoing debate preps. here is what they said about romney's prep. quote, mr. romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. b

round of stimulus and higher tax returns rates on job creators. we are offering specific reforms. strengthen social security. grow jobs. have an energy policy that unleashes american energy and has energy independence. >> chris: the fact that the message hasn't gotten through as effectively as it could so far is, that your fault, the romney campaign fault report voters' fault? >> it is not the voters' fault. i think the president has done an effective job of trying to confuse the issue and distract people. i don't think that is going to work. >> chris: do you take any responsibility? >> we going to pros is cute the campaign in the way that we always planned which is we will tiv this country a very clear choice. do you want stagnation and dependency or growth and opportunity? the problem is not everybody knows our five point plan for a stronger middle class. not everybody knows that we have the solutions that will get people better job security. >> chris: let's talk specifics. >> no matter how many times they tell you they will start talking specifics really soon they don't do it

been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy, the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. the real mitt romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms. but don't boo, vote. but the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers. can't get enough of them. the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries. but the guy on stage last night, he said that he doesn't even know that there are such laws that encourage outsourcing. he's never heard of them. never heard of them never heard of tax breaks company for companies that ship jobs overseas. he said if it's true, he must need a new accountant. now, we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant. so you see, the man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real mitt romney's decisions and what he's been saying for the last year. and that's because he knows full well that

-- >> govern romney's proposal calls for a $5 trillion tax cut. >> andthe man after his ob >> i'm not looking for a $5 trillion tax cut. what i said is i won't put in place a tax cut that adds to the deficit. >> their first debate, contentio contentious. >> for 18 months he's been running on this tax plan. and now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big bold idea is never mind. >> virtually everything he said about my tax plan sin accurate. look, i have five boys. i'm use the to people saying something that is notays ultimately hoping i'll believe it. >> the question this morning, did either candidate do enough to make believers out of america's undecided voters? >>> it is the day after. good morning and welcome to "early start," everybody. >>> it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. first, round one. it is now in the books. mitt romney has something to celebrate. in a cnn poll, 67% said romney won the first presidential debate. 25% think president obama was the victor. >> there were no real knockout punches thrown last night, more like a series of glancing blows with romney the aggress

. but here's what mitt's been promising for the last two years. tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. how do you make that seem warm and fuzzy? well you just need to shake it up as hard as mitt did last night. so, let's give it a shot. okay. here we go. >> a little magic there. good day. i'm andrea mitchell live in washington today. the white house got some welcome news. a september jobs report with the unemployment number now down to 7.8%, the lowest rate since the president took office, first time below 8%. joining me for the daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post-politics.com. the president out on the stump trying to make the best of it, these numbers can bounce around. we'll drill down on the economic facts and figures in a moment, but basically this is a good news. >> yeah. look, good news from the country in that the unemployment rate went down and i would say good news politically for president obama because now the talking point that republicans have used effectively for quite some time to say, you know, 42 straight months of an unemployment over 8%,

and in this country, taxed more. if you tax small business, they are not going to hire. i don't know how you don't figure out what mr. romney so eloquently said in that debate. talking about politics of the 1% or the 47%, conservatives want the best for all folks, and yes, we mean thewe don't want them trapped in poverty. we want them married, paying their taxes -- host: we will get katrina vanden heuvel's response. guest: yeah. listen, if marriage will promote the well-being of the couple, children, great. but in my mind, it is and not just that. that is too simplistic. it is part of the equation. without good jobs, without ensuring that workers have rights and a time -- at the time when big business is so powerful, without doing small things that happened around this country but have taken too much effort, giving women, families early child care, the sense of a community coming together to lift up families, marriages not sufficient. to reduce it to that is too simplistic. no one is saying marriage isn't important. it is not the only a factor in building a family that is doing well. the fact th

promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. the real mitt romney said we don't need anymore teachers in our classrooms. don't boo, vote. [ cheers and applause ] but the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers. can't get enough of them. the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries. but the guy on stage last night, he said that he doesn't even know that there's such laws that encourage outsourcing. never heard of them. never heard of them. never heard of tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. he said that if it's true, he must need a new accountant. now, we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney because he seems to be doing just fine with his current account. so you see, the man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real mitt romney's decisions and what he's been saying for the last year. and that's because he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year.

rid of the charitable deduction, because that's the only way you have revenue neutrality in these tax cuts he's talking about. his only plan for economic improvement in this country is to cut the taxes mainly of the rich. that's his only plan. the only defense of this strategy is he's going to get rid of loopholes. tell us that, governor. show us what you're going to do or stop talking. i think he's got to be that aggressive. but the main message is, show me your cards. stop bluffing. >> we have seen a little bit of telegraphing this week from mr. romney, that maybe he will put some details into his economic talk. he's started to float some new ideas about taxes that he never floated before. my question is whether or not he thinks the right place to unveil those is in a debate setting. surprise the president with something he's never said before or if he wants to save that stuff for a more controlled environment. that will tell us as much about his temperament and his strategy as it will about his plans. let me bring in lawrence o'donnell, chris. lawrence is in the spin room tonight,

on the for the past 18 months. he even through the tax policy away. he just changed everything. it was really unbelievable. i think many people looked at him being more aggressive. that is what they were rewarding. once people started paying attention to exactly why he said, they would see that his -- that he told so many lies and distorted what he was trying to say. i think the president look very presidential. he was not aggressive. he explained exactly what he wanted to say. i thought the whole purpose of the debate was for each one to explain what their policy was. romney just completely changed. that is what was so -- i guess it is not so surprising, because that is what he has done is flip-floping. i hope the president would get an ad out or they show what he has been saying and what he said last night. host: that was an from north carolina. this is from the president's home town newspaper. pieces.susan page's -- piece. she writes -- the podium in front of him not even adorned with the presidential seal. at times he sounded annoyed and defensive about having his tenure challenged in a w

economic theory of tax cuts for the very rich, despite the fact that he denied the existence of tax cuts or the existence of math. the notion that let's go to war on wall street -- go to war with "sesame street" but give wall street a big wet kiss. that's exactly what got us into this mess. >> that's not what they saw. i get the interpretation. you have a campaign to win. but what they saw was one guy who seemed to be someone they'd never seen before. he shattered the fiction of the advertising. he was a guy brimming with new ideas and energy. and they saw the president of the united states sleep walking. >> mike, i don't think -- >> let me finish. the tired contrast rang a bell. romney has ideas, and the president has no vision for his second term. and i think that's what hurt him. >> mike, i don't doubt this was someone they had never seen before. i think there were people in the romney campaign who had never seen this candidate. a week ago paul ryan was asked to explain the math of a $4.8 trillion tax cut. and he said i don't have time. mitt romney said we just don't do math. like mat

ryan and seemed ready to engage on the big stuff. medicare, entitlements, tax reform, national solvency, a restructured welfare state. he has since retreated to the small and safe and when you're behind, how far, safe is fatal. >> i don't think so. i think he has been running a very vigorous campaign. i think most people approve of his selection of paul ryan. it's tough. it's very difficult. >> why is he behind? >> i think he is behind because americans probably feel better than they did before jobs and the economy even though it's terrible. it's sort of the -- >> right track, wrong track? that's interesting. tell me. just stretch that out a little bit. >> i think americans see a glimmer of hope. there is slight improvement in the economy, and i think that some people, for example, a state like ohio, battleground state, thanks in my view to the governor that the unemployment is down. that's true in some of the others. i understand how tough this campaign is. i do believe that media coverage has something to do with it. but that is what it is. i think most americans will still be making

is really clear. we're giving people a clear choice. >> paul ryan was asked about the tax cuts for the millionaires proposed by romney and ryan's budget plans. he was a guest on fox news sunday with chris wallace and the vice presidential candidate made some missteps of his own. >> how much would it cost? >> it's revenue neutral. >> i'm just talking about -- the cut in tax rates. >> the cut in tax rates is lowered for all americans by 20%. it's revenue neutral. >> it's not unless you take away the deductions. we're going to get to that. the first half. lowering the tax rates. does that cost $5 trillion? >> no. >> the master of the power point was having a hard time making a point. let's break down what paul ryan is actually saying here. romney and ryan will give $5 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest americans. subtract an unspecified amount of money of unnamed deductions. somehow you're going to get a revenue neutral tax plan. it's a plan so bogus not even a fox news host can understand it. >> you haven't given me the math. >> i don't have the -- it would take me too long

>> eric: that's it for us. >> jamie: shannon? >> my plan is not to raise taxes on anyone. i'm going to reduce taxes for middle-income americans. >> mr. romney wants another $5 trillion in tax cuts that he can't pay for. >> you can't have it both ways. a battle over $5 trillion, your tax dollars, president obama says a tax cut by the governor would roll out benefits to only the wealthiest americans at the cost of the middle class. romney says, no matter how many times the president says it it is not true. who is telling the truth? i'm shannon bream, live in washington. we have representatives from both sides of the aisle. rnc chairman, reince priebus and dnc chairwoman, debbie wasserman-schultz. welcome. we start in washington with reince priebus. i want to talk about the unemployment numbers for september, 7.8%, the lowest since president obama has been in office. he said, you can't turn back now, america is moving in the right direction. has he made a case that we are seeing recovery? >> not at all. first of all, we will let the economists argue over the numbers. i know people are

worse economic news again. we saw that corporate tax has dropped by about a third from precrisis levels, basically small businesses are just not growing in this environment and big businesses are chasing profits abroad. so the government is just not getting the tax take on that front. in the asset classes, you can see some of the levels not that good at the moment. bundes still attracting a lot of attention. we've been waiting on spain to fishlgly l-- officially ask fo that aid. nonetheless, we're not seeing too much pressure on the periphery, 5.75%. let me send it back to you. >> thank you very much. the first presidential debate. john harwood is on the ground in denver. he joins us with the latest nbc news "wall street journal" poll. it looks like things are starting to even out at least a little. is this the bounce that president obama got after the democratic convention coming back down? >> well, i think it's the bounce from the convention and the surge that he got on top of the convention with that 47% video, so there is some good news for romney. not only our national poll, but a

tax plan without blowing up the deficit or sticking it to the middle class. that's the math . we can't afford to go down that road again. >> steve: so the day after his terrible performance even the new york times called him president xannex. they have gone in damage control mode . they were portraying romney as an extremist and now back to romney is a flip-flopper and a big fact liar . >> brian: i thought the senator was right when team obama got a earful. the strategy was to lay back and not make major mistakes. governor romney will be a true choice. he defined himself as competent and capable . he was making himself relevant and holding the job. that's what you walk away . he undid over two million worth of advertising. >> gretchen: he had a answer about the five billion, trillion argument that the president said. he said that is not my tax plan. and you can see the difference when they are on a stage together going after each another and back out on the stump. on the stump you can say whatever you want. these are people supporting each cand date. this is a moment romney respondin

of the country.. heish you do tax reform reform -- i don't ornk he is gogoing to do -- about what he is, decent human being. romney said, "my heart aches for the people i've seen. many are hurting in country i want to help them ." getting thatand not message. how'd you get that message? call it problem he has -- laid ability, call it what y you -- is compounded by the .747% remember john kerry? voted $47 billion, i against i" this plays into the negative of mitt romney as an aloof, detached, uncaring, just empathy forow n in his social bracket.ic >> from m the politico piece --- "where is the moment where romney sings the praises of the waitresstiff, the shift?"a double mike huckabee told jay leno that romney reminds you of the guy you.ired >> romney isis not going to be e your pain. feels not a great politician. one of the reason at this -- it did not come . of nowowhere out of tens of million ads by the obama he handledbout how ith bain capital and all that. other essence was the series thasay he wants to produce taxes on the rich. reduce taxes on the e rich. romney has protested that that tr

biden. [video clip] >> they voted against extending the middle class tax cuts. why? because they were holding it hostage to make sure they could continue their tax cuts. and romney adds another tax cut with a total cost to the economy of $1.70 trillion. it is $250,000 a year in additional tax cuts for those same 120,000 families and anybody making more than $1 million. >> all these promises were made on the idea of hope and change and it sounded pretty good to people. but when the rhetoric went aside and the time to act occurred, the ideas are the old idea that a failed time and again. borrowing and spending and regulating and taxing and printing money, all these things do not lead to prosperity and. all these policies say take power from people, many from families and a successful small businesses and job creators, ascended to washington and then they decide. that does not work. host: that's a taste of the vice-presidential nominees over the weekend. they will go head-to-head on october 11 in their only official the bait. let's stick to your calls. will the vice-presidential candidat

on tax policy, energy, medicare reform, your hometown newspaper has taken to calling you senator gone. you've got one of the worst attendance records in the united states senate. now, in my capacity as vice president, i am the president of the senate, the presiding officer. i'm up in the senate most tuesdays when they're in session. the first time i ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight. with respect to israel and palestine, gwen, the suicide bombers in part were generated by saddam hussein, who paid $25,000 to the families of suicide bombers. i personally think one of the reasons that we don't have as many suicide attacks today in israel as we had in the past is because saddam's no longer in business. we've been strong supporters of israel. if president stepped forward and put in place a policy basically that said we will support the establishment of two states. the first president ever to say establish and support a palestinian state next door to israelis. but first, there has to be an interlocking agreement you can trust and deal with. we don't have that now. with y

actually, it is a bit more than that. but we do not need is a tax increase that will cost us 700,000 jobs. two years ago, the president said you do not want to raise taxes in a bad economy. the economy was better than that it is now. ladies and gentleman, this is a big choice. it is not only about taxes. it is about freedom. it is about our principles. it is about our country. it is about the idea of our country. america is so much more than a country with a flag. it is an idea. these ideas make us who we are. they make us special. i will see something that in washington is considered out of date or wrong, and it is this -- america is an exceptional nation. we are not afraid to say so. [cheers and applause] >> usa! usa! usa! >> we have a chance to get ourselves on the right track. we have a chance to vote for someone who will protect our freedoms. he will lead to protect our religious freedom. he will protect our second amendment rights. ladies and gentlemen, right here in virginia, we have a big choice to make. america has a big choice to make. america will make the right choice

at a campaign event in north carolina. that set off another war of words. >> how they can justify raiding taxes on the middle class that has been buried the last four years. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been "buried." we agree. >> let's bring in the news nation political panel, associate editor and columnist for the "washington post" and msnbc analyst eugene robinson, abby stoddard, columnist for the hill, michael spir mitt romney is con nish, talk show host and chip saltzman, strategist. i would like to start off with you, is it fair to compare the two tape you the president's tape the conservatives were talking about since last night and the video of congressman ryan saying you 30% of people want to live their lives on welfare is it fair to compare these tapes, especially given the president's tape, then-senator obama, was covered by the media then? >> it a beautiful day in denver today, tamron. first of all. >> nice weather report, eugene. >> obama says nothing new on the tape and it was covered years aleen sirgany but fair it is

clear to people that all these falsehoods coming out of the obama campaign about our tax policy about our medicare reform and all that are just that. >> reporter: romney will be working in pre-debate campaigning as he arrives. every day counts. wolf? >> preside obama is spending the next couple of days in henderson, nevada, gearing up for wednesday's debate. our white house correspondent dan lothian is over at the white house. he getting new information. what's the latest on his xaeb preparation, dan? >> reporter: campaign official telling me that the president began those practices last might after arriving in defense nevada and continued these rehearsals this morning in nevada as well. taking only a break this afternoon. one of the things that they are really working on is trying to get the president to be more concise and in his answers. you know, sometime it is president can be long winded and the campaign has admitted this and it is not the most effective way to deliver your message. so they are trying to get the president to answer these questions with very few words. he has a s

to former house speaker nancy pelosi. >> who will raise taxes on the middle class? barack obama and the liberals already have. >> reporter: fresh ammunition for tomorrow night's debate at an event earlier today in charlotte, north carolina, wolf, biden said how can the romney campaign justify raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried -- in his words, buried, the last four years. paul ryan at a campaign event in iowa just a few moments ago seized on those comments and said vice president biden said that the middle class has been buried. we agree. he goes onto say that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states, wolf. i have a strg sense this will be brought up at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about th

's automatic tax increases and you look at the numbers and i'm sure-- if these things happen, you are going to have a government-created recession. >recession. >> schieffer: what do you think, newt gingrich? do you think the democrat and republicans will be able to get together after the election? because that seems to be the only chance that this might happen in order-- >> that will depend a lot-- whoever wins the election has to spend the first 60 days prior to being sworn in reaching out to the other party. i mean, this is-- where we are right now is utterly, totally irrational. and i think whether it's president obama, who would have to fundamentally change his strategy, or governor romney who din fact, work with democrats when he was the governor of massachusetts, whoever is president, if they're serious about solving this, has to reach out. i want to make a deeper point which is what michelle has been doing. it isn't enough to talk about bigger or smaller. we need a scale of innovation in getting these things to work. it's not about a cheaper or more expensive public school system but

people are you paying payroll taxes? that's a pretty good number. the unemployment comes from what we call the household survey, calling people up at home and saying do you have a job? are you working? are you unemployment and looking for a job or unemployed and not looking for a job. in that group it's a larger group because you have the self-employed. over the obama years, more and more people have left the labor force completely. especially older people between 50 and 56 that live off their savings and ira's before they should. some of those folks have returned in part-time work essentially in home-based businesses. about 110, 115,000 jobs are created in the establishment survey or the employer survey. but about 850 in the household survey, that would imply 700,000 or about 5% of american families have established a home-based business. it's completely implausible that that could happen. >> okay. so you say it's completely implausible and you are not the first economist to say this. and the only sample in terms of teeny fraction something like 55,000 people they call. is it possibl
